In recent years, the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi have played in Ligue 1, but the French top flight has a rich history of great goalscorers. Find out the top 10 of all time below.

1. Delio Onnis (299 goals)

The top goalscorer in Ligue 1 history is Delio Onnis, who scored 299 goals across 449 games in the division. He was crowned top goalscorer in the French top flight five times, and is remembered for his prolific time at Monaco, where he scored 157 of his goals. He also had spells at Reims, Tours and Toulon where he carried on his goalscoring form.

2. Bernard Lacombe (255 goals)

Second on the list is Bernard Lacombe who scored a total of 255 goals. He has played the most amount of games of the 10 players on the list, making 494 appearances in the division across 18 years in the league. His main two stints came with Lyon, where he scored 123 goals, before a move to Bordeaux in the latter stages of his career that saw him notch 118 goals in 243 appearances. His goalscoring form earned him multiple call-ups to the France national team, including a selection for the Euro 84 tournament, which Les Bleus won.

3. Herve Revelli (216 goals)

Remembered as one of the great forwards of the 20th century in Ligue 1, Herve Revelli scored 216 goals in 389 games. He was most prolific at Saint-Etienne, where he scored 175 goals across two spells and was a key part of their multiple title-winning side – which saw them win Ligue 1 seven times in 10 years. Before Kylian Mbappe came along, Revelli was the first Frenchman to score 30 goals in a calendar year, evidencing his level of goalscoring which is part of why he is remembered so highly by Saint-Etienne and French football fans alike.

4. Thadee Cisowski (206 goals)

Thadee Cisowski was a prolific striker in the 1950s and 60s, with a total of 206 Ligue 1 goals. Best remembered for his years at RC Paris, was a prolific goalscorer but was unfortunately unable to ever fire his team to a much-coveted league title. Born in Poland, Cisowski was regarded as one of the greatest French goalscorers of all time, but he struggled for international recognition. Often unlucky with injuries, he missed both the 1954 and 1958 World Cup tournaments.

5. Roger Piantoni (203 goals)

Next on the list is Reims legend Roger Piantoni, who scored 203 goals in the French first division. Piantoni was part of a Reims squad that won three league titles between 1957-8 and 1961-62, with his goals a large part of their success in that period. During his time at the club, he scored at a phenomenal rate, earning him the consideration as one of the world’s best at the time. He is still widely remembered by Ligue 1 and French fans alike, for his prolific goalscoring touch.

6. Kylian Mbappe (191 goals)

Kylian Mbappe is arguably the greatest player we have seen in Ligue 1 in recent generations, scoring 191 goals in just 245 games. Mbappe’s rise to stardom was sharp, breaking into Monaco’s first team in 2015 before winning the Ligue 1 title in 2016-17. His form earned him a transfer in an initial loan deal eventually worth €180million to French giants Paris Saint-Germain aged just 18, the most expensive transfer for a teenage player of all time. It was his time at the Parc des Princes where he really stated his case as one of the world’s best, scoring an incredible 175 goals in just 205 games winning six Ligue 1 titles, nine domestic cups and the 2018 World Cup with France to boot. Mbappe made the switch to Real Madrid in the 2024 summer transfer window, and has continued his devastating goalscoring form for Los Blancos. If he were ever to return to Ligue 1, there is no doubt the all-time goal record for the league would be in danger.

7. Joseph Ujlaki (188 goals)

Joseph Uljaki spent 17 seasons in Ligue 1, playing for five different clubs, notching 188 goals in 432 games. His most prolific spell came at Nice, where he fired the club to a league title in 1956, as well as playing a leading role in the Coupe de France in 1954. He scored more goals during his period at RC Paris and is widely regarded as one of the best right wingers in the history of the division, due to his longevity and goal threat in the final third.

8. Fleury Di Nallo (187 goals)

Next on the list is ex-Lyon and Montpellier striker Fluery Di Nello, who scored 187 goals in Ligue 1. Mostly remembered for his stint at Lyon, Di Nallo is the club’s top scorer of all time, scoring a total of 182 goals in his 14-year stint at the club. He could never lead the club to a league title however, but did play a leading part in OL’s three French cup successes in 1964, 1967 and 1973.

=9. Carlos Bianchi (179 goals)

Carlos Bianchi was a prolific Argentine forward, who played for Reims, Paris Saint-Germain and Strasbourg across his 220 games in Ligue 1. He boasts one of the most impressive goal-to-game ratios in the list, notching 179 times in total. His precision in front of goal was not quite enough to ever inspire his team-mates to the league title, but he did win the Top Scorer award five times in the 1970s, including four consecutive years from 1975-76 through to 1978-79, seeing him remembered as one of the finest South American’s in the competition’s rich history.

=9. Gunnar Andersson (179 goals)

Tied with Carlos Bianchi on 179 goals is one of Marseille’s greatest players, Gunnar Andersson. The Swede topped the scoring charts in both 1951-52 and 1952-53, however his goals could never lead OM to silverware. He holds way as Marseille’s top goalscorer of all time, ahead of players such as like Jean-Pierre Papin and Florian Thauvin, showing why is remembered so fondly at the Stade Velodrome.
